Guns Guns Guns is by CHEPERGame, and Poki files it under shooting, running and number games. All three describe a part of how it plays.

A level moves you forward along a track. On the way you pass gates, and the choice of which gate to go through is the heart of the game: the right gates increase your income and upgrade your guns. You steer left and right with A and D, the arrow keys or an on-screen joystick, and you shoot with a click or a tap.

At the end of a level there are monsters to break through, and that is where your choices show. The firepower you built up along the way decides how easily you get past them. Your firepower grows with every round, so the game keeps a steady sense of getting stronger.

The appeal is in quick judgement. Each gate asks a small question, answered by steering left or right, and the monsters at the end are the answer sheet. When a level goes well you can trace it back to good choices along the way, and when it goes badly the same is true.

Noted on the first runs

• Read the gate before you steer into it. A glance at the numbers is enough, and a wrong gate early can cost more than it seems.

• Line up the next gate early. Movement is only left and right, so late changes of lane are where most mistakes come from.

• Keep the end of the level in mind. The point of the gates is to be strong enough for the monsters, not just to collect the biggest number.

• On a phone, keep your thumb low on the joystick so that it does not hide the gates coming towards you.

• If you get stuck on the monsters at the end of a level, replay it with the gates in mind rather than your aim. The shortfall usually comes from the choices made earlier.

Who it sits well with

Guns Guns Guns suits players who like fast choices, simple steering and watching numbers climb. It works for short sessions, one level at a time, on any device Poki lists. It is also an easy game to put down and pick up again, since each level stands on its own.

The less good parts

• It is a shooter. The targets are monsters and the style is cartoonish, but in our view it is better for older children and up. This is not an official rating.

• Poki shows ads around its games, so expect an ad before playing and sometimes between levels.

• The loop of gates, upgrades and monsters repeats with each level. It is satisfying for a while, but players who want variety may find it samey.

• Choosing gates means a little quick arithmetic on the move; younger players may find that harder than the shooting.
